Julia Plummer is a physics student at Pierce College who plans to transfer to a four-year university in 2007. Her goal is to attend a UC with a focus on quantum mechanics.
What brought you to Exploring Physics at UCLA, and what did you take away from the experience?
I attended Exploring Physics at UCLA because I wanted to better understand the opportunities and pathways available to me after choosing physics as my major. The program introduced me to different fields within physics and the research that students can pursue. It also gave me the opportunity to connect with professors and learn about the experiences, challenges, and decisions that shaped students’ journeys toward their academic and career goals.
The program also allowed me to learn about the universities represented at the event, the research their faculty conduct, and how they communicate complex topics to students who may be encountering them for the first time. The professors who presented did more than explain their research; they inspired us to learn more, ask questions, and consider attending their institutions. The event also opened doors to meaningful conversations with faculty, helping me better understand what they look for in students and potential interns.
Did anything you heard or experienced at the event change or expand the way you think about studying physics and where it might take you?
When I switched my major from film to physics, I had many concerns about career opportunities and the process of transferring to a four-year university to continue studying my chosen field. Hearing from students who had faced similar challenges and learning about the opportunities available at different universities helped ease many of those worries. The event showed me that there are exciting possibilities ahead, provided I take the necessary steps to pursue them, such as building relationships with professors, attending events, and seeking out research and other opportunities.
The students who shared their experiences also conveyed a genuine passion for what they do. Hearing their stories reassured me that pursuing physics can lead to a fulfilling future and strengthened my confidence in my decision to study the subject.
As you think about transferring to a four-year university to continue studying physics, did this event change how you see that next step or what you’re looking for in a university?
This event helped me better understand the steps I need to take to reach my academic and career goals. Hearing the guest speakers describe their journeys helped me identify which universities might be the best fit for me and what qualities to look for in future professors and mentors.
It also helped me narrow down my options by introducing me to the research opportunities, academic programs, teaching styles, and student resources available at different institutions. I now have a clearer idea of what to consider when choosing a university and how to find an environment where I can grow as a student and aspiring physicist.
I believe Sherry’s decision to create this event for transfer students and aspiring physics students was incredibly valuable. It brought me and other STEM students a greater sense of confidence, excitement, and reassurance about our futures. I look forward to attending more events like this because of the thought and effort Sherry puts into making them meaningful and beneficial for students. Exploring Physics at UCLA made a real difference in how I view my future, and I am grateful for the opportunities it provided to learn, connect, and envision what comes next.
