Jose was a first generation college student who entered UCLA to pursue a degree in pure mathematics and graduated with a B.S. in Biophysics. He then chose to stay at UCLA to pursue a Ph.D. in molecular biology, focusing on the development of new imaging methods and new anti-cancer therapies. After a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA in the Department of Biological Biochemistry, focused on the atomic-scale understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, he was selected to lead an independent research group as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He teaches courses in Chemistry & Biochemistry and is a faculty director of the integrated & interdisciplinary undergraduate research program. He is a true bruin and a cycling enthusiast who enjoys the sights and sounds of the city.
