Anna Sargsyan graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Armenian Studies before continuing through UCLA’s Departmental Scholars Program to earn her M.S. in Biochemistry, Molecular and Structural Biology.

As an undergraduate and graduate student, she conducted research in the Schmitt Lab, where she studied molecular tools for investigating PINK1 and mitochondrial biology. Her thesis “Comparison of TurboID and split-TurboID for Mitochondrial Proteome Mapping Under Depolarization Stress” was published recently. This work brought together biochemistry, proteomics, and mass spectrometry workflows to better understand how cells respond to mitochondrial damage at the molecular level.

Anna also served as a Learning Assistant for CHEM 153L and CHEM 153C, supporting students in upper-division biochemistry courses and helping foster a collaborative learning environment. In addition, she worked as a New Student Advisor at UCLA, where she guided incoming students through their transition to the university and helped them navigate academic planning, campus resources, and student life.

Following graduation, Anna joined Amgen as a research fellow. She is passionate about scientific research, mentorship, and helping students build confidence as they navigate demanding academic and professional paths. She hopes to share the lessons she learned through research, teaching, mentorship, and balancing multiple responsibilities during her time at UCLA.
