Christopher Gutierrez is a born and raised Los Angeleno who graduated from UCLA with dual B.S. degrees in physics and mathematics and a minor in classical civilizations. He earned an M.S. degree in physics at Cal State LA before moving onto Columbia University for his physics Ph.D. Christopher enjoyed postdoctoral research positions at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of British Columbia Quantum Matter Institute before joining the faculty at the UCLA Dept. of Physics and Astronomy in 2020. His research group, the Quantum Matter Design Studio, focuses on creating and imaging new electronic phases of matter in “quantum materials” — materials that display spectacular quantum effects at the human scale.Using special atomic microscopes, his group images the strange collective behavior of electrons in materials that may one day be used for energy efficient electronics, light harvesting technology, and quantum information.
